RTS #046 The tax deadline is over, let the REAL work begin

Tax planning, the valuable kind, is a year-round endeavor. That doesn’t mean you are doing it everyday, every week or even every month but it does mean you intentionally take proactive steps multiple times a year to make sure your clients know the importance of tax planning AND that you want to be part of the conversation.

With the deadline still visible in your rearview mirror, it’s a great time to take a couple of actions to set you, your team, and your clients up for tax planning success:

  1. Request tax returns from every single client (the only exception to this is if you are at rock star level with your relationship building and you are reviewing draft tax returns before they were ever filed)
  2. Block time on your calendar to level up your tax game. This can be courses, conferences, CE, reviewing tax returns (PRACTICE), or learning from other people who are crushing it in this area.
  3. Review your client service calendar for opportunities to add tax planning or update how it is being addressed. If it’s not on the calendar, it’s not going to happen.

If you need ideas of what to learn or what to deliver to clients, that is literally what we are here for. Revisit previous RTS tax newsletters, listen to the podcast, and attend a webinar (like the one next Wednesday). Whether you are getting content from our team here at RTS or one of the other great resources in the industry, there is plenty out there, but the only thing that counts is what you TAKE ACTION on.

Happy Tax Planning!
